FROM EDITOR ALAN LIDSTONE

We had a great summer and celebrated its "official end" this
past Labor Day. Although we had more rain than usual (a
50-year record), most of it was the famous Florida
afternoon thunderstorms. We had the cleanest air in years
from the increased rainfall and no hurricanes so far.
While much of the southern half of the state is ever so slightly
soggy, there has been relatively little flooding (other than the
June storms) and very few campground or RV resorts
experienced water problems.

As our fellow RVers up north begin taking steps to store or
winterize their RVs, we are approaching some of the best
RVing and camping weather of the year with mild temperatures,
water temperatures still in mid-eighties, and headed into the
dry season. Many resorts and campgrounds are running
specials to stretch your dollars before the annual migration
of winter season RVers who opt for sunshine and palm trees
rather than snow and ice.

If you're on your way back on I-95 from the fall colors in
New York or New England, you'll find that campgrounds and
resorts tend to empty out after Labor Day. If you're taking
your time heading south, consider stopping in the DC area at
convenient Cherry Hill Park (http://www.cherryhillpark.com),
or any of the many excellent campgrounds and resorts around
historic Williamsburg. Another great layover is Jefferson's
Monticello, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Charlottesville,
Virginia. The closest campground is the Charlottesville KOA,
(http://www.koakampgrounds.com/where/VA/46103.htm)
about 15 minutes away. For a comprehensive directory of
campgrounds along I-95, visit here.

Golfers heading south will love Jeykll Island in South Georgia,
just 30 miles from the Florida border. There's always
something to do, with four golf courses, a historic district,
walking paths, beautiful beaches, fishing and the convenient
Jeykll Island Campground.

(NOTE: Florida RVer editor Alan Lidstone is the author of the
popular book RVing: Getting Out And Staying Out.)

LIKE GOLF, BOATING AND RELAXING?
The Okeechobee KOA Resort provides a great combination
of recreation, fun and relaxation. The 750-site resort is
in Southeast Florida on Rt. 441 about a quarter-mile from the
north side of Lake Okeechobee, a 28,500-acre National Audubon
Society Wildlife Sanctuary, and about one and a half miles
south of historic Okeechobee. Many popular south Florida
locations are within each driving distance including
Fort Pierce/Port Saint Lucie (39 mi.), West Palm (67 mi.),
Fort Lauderdale (106 mi.) and Fort Myers (90 mi.).

Lake Okeechobee offers some of the finest bass fishing in
the country. The air boat rides show parts of the lake's
swamps, which abound with a variety of Florida tropical plants and
lush vegetation, birds and alligators. Historic Okeechobee is
laid-back Old Florida. Located in an area of cattle ranching,
citrus groves, agriculture, and nature at its finest, it provides
an environment where you can relax, hunt, fish and appreciate life.

The resort is meticulously maintained with a nine-hole golf
course. The area is popular with seasonal visitors who come
down year after year to revel in the mild weather and camaraderie.
The park contains an RV section, a park model section, and all the
amenities. A propane delivery truck drives through the resort
every week so you don't have to move to fill up.Learn more.

MAINTENANCE TIP: FLORIDA, UV RAYS AND TIRES
Relatively high temperatures, brightness of the sun, and UV
rays can damage tires more quickly in Florida than many other
areas. Keep tires properly inflated and use a good UV protectant
along with tire covers when parked for a while.
