RV camping with
woods and water

If you like woods and water, you'll find lots of RV resorts and campgrounds where you can relax and commune with nature in DeSoto and Hardee counties. One we enjoyed was the family-owned and operated Peace River Campground in Arcadia (west central Florida). Since the Peace River does flood on occasion, the kids will ask about the high-water marks displayed on the buildings.

The campground is just outside of downtown Arcadia, well-known for its antique shops and the home of the All Florida Championship Rodeo.
Arcadia is about 45 miles east of the Gulf of Mexico and 75 miles west of the Atlantic. Many of the historic homes and businesses were restored and placed on the Registry of Historic Places. The area is primarily agricultural and rural and has avoided the development problems sometimes seen in other areas of the state.

The campground abounds with large oak trees, large sites, an excellent store and the Peace River Dance Hall (community room) with frequent activities and a professional and helpful staff. Campground activities popular with parents and kids include the Friday night movie, Saturday morning breakfasts, and the Saturday night ice cream specials followed by Bingo. It's very laid-back, relaxing and family oriented. The area is popular with snowbirds and has a good selection of RV resorts and campgrounds.

Located on SR 70, the campground is approximately an hour from Bradenton, Sarasota and Venice, known for their beaches and cultural, dining and entertainment activities, and the drive takes about an hour.

The main north-south road is Route 17, which runs from Punta Gorda (on the Gulf of Mexico), diagonally across Florida, and up the East Coast. Heading north through Zolfo Springs and Wauchulla takes you through historic old-Florida towns on your way to the Kissimmee and Disney World attractions. Heading southwest about 25 miles takes you to upscale Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte areas.

Popular activities include canoeing on the Peace River and fossil hunting. This area is one of the most prolific areas for finding a wide variety of fossils - from shark's teeth to mammoth bones. Another favorite activity is paintball. A separate area set aside for enthusiasts of that sport.
